| Sunrise,
sunset... dusk, dawn -- these dramatic hours of the day consistently
mesmerize me. The light and colors subtly shift, never the same,
always elusive. My art gives me the opportunity to freeze these
moments in time. |

I have two
methods of working. In my Road Trip series, (such as Phoenix Sunset
I) I begin with photographs shot while driving - either around
town or out on the open highway. An element of chance is involved,
since I rarely look through the viewfinder but instead aim in
the general direction and shoot. I then reinterpret the original
photograph in paint, pastel or digitally. I do love driving across
the US, and working on these roadscapes gives me another way of
"seeing" the country in its infinite variety. |

For my plein
air paintings, I slow down and scrutinize a particular site.
I painted "Yucca at Sunrise" series during a residency at Dorland
Mountain Arts Colony in Temecula, CA last June. I focussed on
a desiccated yucca plant and painted it at seven sequential sunrises.
Every morning was different, and through paint, I was able to
study the distinctive nuances of that specific time and place. |

Overall,
an aura of serenity permeates the work.
Rural, urban, and the roads in-between -- I share with the viewer
windows for contemplation.
